Syrian education minister "Hazwan al-Wazz" said Russian will be introduced as an elective course in intermediate- and high school-level grades next year.

al-Wazz made the comments while touring schools in Damascus over the weekend, to check on the progress of end-of-semester examinations.

The minister said students would have the opportunity beginning in grade seven to select either French or Russian as an elective course, stressing  "at he beginning of the new school year, the ministry will have completed all of the preparations .. for Russian instruction in a number of its schools".
