Intelligence chief killed in Libya's Benghazi

A Libyan security official said that head of military intelligence in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi was shot dead on Friday during a visit to his family in nearby Derna.

The official told AFP "unknown assailants opened fire at Colonel Fethallah al-Gaziri, head of Benghazi military intelligence, and killed him", adding that the colonel was in Derna for the marriage of a niece.

In the wake of the 2011 revolt which toppled leader Moamer Kadhafi, militants in lawless eastern Libya have targeted security forces and foreigners, as well as judges, political activists and the media, killing more than 300 people.
